Information for NSW students and parents

Prevalence of hearing loss and its relationship to leisure-sound exposure

Students from a selected group of schools/colleges across NSW are being invited to participate in a project conducted by the National Acoustic Laboratories (NAL), investigating the hearing health of young Australians. Students and parents at the selected schools/colleges will receive notification of their school/college’s involvement via school notices, newsletters or flyers.
NAL will make formal arrangements, with the selected schools/colleges, for a visiting Research Audiologist to offer evaluations to students during school hours. The appointment will take approximately forty five minutes. The study also requires participating students, (and their parent/guardians if appropriate), to complete a short questionnaire about the student's medical history (in relation to hearing health), and about their everyday leisure activities.
To say “thanks”, all students who complete the assessments will receive a small gift.

How do I find out more?
Students who are interested in taking part (and parents of students under the age of 18 years) should carefully read the attached Information for Participants which fully explains what is involved.

My school/college is already involved – how can I sign up for an appointment?
If you know for sure that your school/college is part of the study (i.e, you heard about the study through a school notice or newletter) you can also go ahead and print, sign, and post the Consent Form (i.e.,the last page of the Information for Participants document) to us at the address above, marked attention to Lyndal Carter.   If you are under 18 years of age your parent will have to sign the Consent form too.
Please note: Your school/college may make additional arrangements for collecting your signed consent form. This will be advertised via a notice or newsletter to students and parents.

My school/college isn’t involved – is there any way I can take part?
If you are interested in taking part but have not seen a notice that your school is participating, let us know - we may be able to approach your school/college about getting involved.
Please note: The number of schools NAL can visit is limited. Participation will be subject to prior formal agreement with your school/college Administration that NAL may visit to conduct this research.

I have a few more questions – who can I ask?
If you would like to discuss any aspect of the evaluation and/or participation before giving us your details, please feel free to contact: Lyndal Carter, Senior Research Audiologist on (02) 9412 6962, Megan Gilliver on (02) 9412 6944 or email the team at iHEAR@nal.gov.au
