The Longitudinal Outcomes of Children with Hearing Impairment, or LOCHI study, is a prospective, population-based study of children with hearing aids and cochlear implants born in NSW, Queensland and Victoria. The purpose of this study is to examine the long-term speech, language, psychosocial and educational outcomes of children with hearing impairment.
We have enrolled over 400 children in the LOCHI study through Australian Hearing centres and early intervention services. The development of children participating in the study is measured after they have been fitted with their hearing aid or cochlear implant for 6 months and 12 months. Their development is assessed again at 3 years old and 5 years old. It is hoped that the study will continue to monitor the progress of participants beyond 5 years of age.
