An examination of the distribution of attenuation results of hearing protectors obtained when using the “inexperienced subject fit” test method

(Research Project Prev02.3)

Project Leader: Warwick Williams

Broad Objectives:  To better understand the real world effectiveness of hearing protectors by examining the distribution of attenuation results obtained from the “inexperienced subjective fit testing” method in the laboratory.

Hypothesis:  That there is a bimodal distribution of attenuation results that arises from using the inexperienced subject fit procedure that is currently applied to the testing of hearing protectors in Australia. This phenomenon appears to be particularly evident with earplugs more so than ear muffs.
