Outcomes for children with hearing aids

(Research Project CRC C6.3)

Project Leader: Teresa Ching

Broad Objectives:  To quantify how well hearing-impaired children hear with amplification, and the consequences for speech and language understanding, at various ages.  The project will also produce tools that enable clinicians to compare the performance of individual children to hearing-impaired children, and normal-hearing children generally.  As a consequence, the project will also identify the importance of various factors to achieving good outcomes for children.

Specific objectives:

1.      To measure, longitudinally and in a cross section of different ages, the speech and language outcomes for hearing-impaired children.

2.      To analyse the data to determine the effect of various factors on outcomes.

3.      To produce a software tool that will enable clinicians to predict the likely range of outcomes for individual children, and to compare that range with population norms.
