Functional assessment of children’s performance with amplification

(Research Program C3.7)

Project Leader: Teresa Ching, Australian Hearing

Broad Objectives: To devise and validate a measurement tool based on teachers’ and parents’ observations that can be used to assess the effectiveness of hearing aids fitted to young children.

This project is based on the findings from a small group of older children that indicate good correlation between the amplification characteristics preferred by the children in a clinical test and the effectiveness of the same characteristics in real life for the children as observed by teachers and parents. Because young children cannot perform the clinical test, functional evaluation appears to be a viable method for evaluation of amplification options.

Hypothesis: That a valid tool for measuring effectiveness of hearing aids can be based on a systematic use of teachers’ and parents’ observations.
